AFTER an eventful and enjoyable 2024, members of Carew WI in Pembrokeshire gathered in January to exchange New Year greetings and catch up on local happenings since the December meeting.

Vice President Margaret F was in the chair with Secretary Liz assisting as they sang Jerusalem and began the formal meeting. Get well wishes were sent to President Edith who is suffering from one of winter’s viruses. The ladies know she is being well cared for and look forward to seeing her in February.

The minutes of December’s meeting were read, signed and matters arising dealt with. Bronwen was thanked for arranging a very enjoyable Christmas lunch and visit to Picton Castle and thoughts turned to Carew WI’s June trip - suggestions to be made in time for the next meeting.

Liz reported back on our representation at the Group Carol Service in Cosheston on what was a very chilly night. Carew WI will host the Carol Service in 2025 at Carew Wesley Chapel. After tea and cakes, members welcomed Rod Haynes, speaker for the afternoon.

Rod outlined his career as a police dog handler and specialist trainer. He applauded the life-saving role dogs have played in keeping the public safe from explosive devices over the years. He has dedicated his retirement to researching dog psychology and what followed was a fascinating insight into canine and dog owner behaviour.

Rod gave invaluable tips on how to tackle certain issues which dog owners often struggle with by misinterpreting the behaviour as they train their animals for living within the home. He also addressed dog handling in the great outdoors by giving hints and tips on how to deal with situations in public places.

The ladies agreed they could have listened to him for hours and everyone came away with hints and tips they will never forget. Elvina thanked Rod for giving up his valuable time and wished him well.

Members came out to darkening skies and dropping temperatures and those going home to their animals would now interpret their behaviour in a completely different way and react accordingly…hopefully!
