WHY were people seen scurrying around St. Flo’s carrying large black buckets on Saturday, July 13? Yes, if course, it was the Grand Weigh In of the Great St Florence Potato Challenge 2024.

This started on March 2 when would-be competitors received their bucket, seed potato and a copy of the rules. They could grow their potato in any medium they chose: with some competitors keeping the ingredients a closely guarded secret!

The results of their endeavours were now about to be revealed. The tension was palpable!

The buckets were transported to Grandiflora where volunteer riddlers, under the watchful eye of judge, Simon, set about their task..

Meanwhile, back at the Church, people were able to enjoy refreshments, take part in tower tours and relax and listen to Mark playing his saxophone. There was also a teddy bear abseil to entertain the children.

Finally, the buckets were returned to the Church. Their contents has been counted and weighed.

The moment of truth had arrived.

Judge, Walter Simon, ably conducted the proceedings.

The all important results were as follows: Adults – Largest number: 55 by Mary Davies; Heaviest crop: 2,422g and champion was Laurence Mathias. Children (under 16 yrs): Largest number: 55 by Edith and Eryn; Heaviest crop: 1,229g by Archie.

The organisers of the potato challenge are very grateful to their sponsors, Puffin Produce Ltd / Blas y Tir (potatoes and prizes, Giles Birt from Birt and Co (buckets and stickers), J B Roofing (rosettes), John Brace and support from Jewson.

The sum raised this year was a magnificent £1,300 in aid of St Florence Church and £200 in donations to the Tower Fund.

A ‘huge thank you’ goes to everyone involved in any way, who made the event possible.
