Mark Heron is the dynamic and charismatic musical director of The Paul Sartori Community Choir. His infectious energy has long inspired those around him, but in October 2023, Mark took on a new challenge—running.

Nia Cotton of Paul Sartori Hospice at Home Service tells the story:

“Starting with the Couch to 5K program, Mark quickly built momentum and never looked back. One year on, he set his sights on an even greater goal: The Great South Run, a prestigious 10-mile race in Portsmouth, scheduled for October 20, 2024.

“Mark’s commitment to this challenge wasn’t just personal—it was also for a cause close to his heart. He decided to run in support of The Paul Sartori Foundation, a charity dedicated to providing hospice care and support for people in Pembrokeshire. His training was consistent and determined, with regular Parkruns and a milestone race at the 2024 Swansea Bay 10K serving as a warm-up event. Everything was set for him to take on Portsmouth’s famous 10-mile route.

“However, nature had other plans. As race day approached, extreme weather conditions forced the unfortunate cancellation of the Great South Run. What should have been a celebratory day of personal achievement and fundraising turned into disappointment for thousands of runners. But Mark wasn’t about to let months of training go to waste.

“Determined to honour his commitment, he decided to take matters into his own hands. On November 1, 2024, just a couple of weeks after the cancelled event, Mark laced up his running shoes and completed his own 10-mile run in Carmarthen. Running without the usual race atmosphere, fellow participants, or cheering crowds didn’t make it easy, but his drive and determination carried him through.

“His perseverance not only earned him the medal and finisher’s t-shirt that would have been awarded in Portsmouth but also reinforced the spirit of resilience that defines both runners and community champions. More importantly, his efforts ensured that much-needed funds still went to The Paul Sartori Foundation. Mark raised the fantastic amount of £620 for the charity.

“Mark’s journey is a testament to the power of dedication, adaptability, and giving back. His challenge may not have unfolded as expected, but he made sure it counted.”

“A huge congratulations to Mark for turning adversity into triumph - your determination is truly inspiring!” added Nia.
