In Pembrokeshire, from May 8 - 28, there will be library service disruption as the computer system enters a period of changeover. Unstaffed access at Narberth and Neyland libraries will be unavailable until the process is complete.

The computer system is used for managing library membership and customer account details, transaction records, library item details and access to digital services. During the switch over period services such as reservations/requests, online catalogue and self-service machines will be unavailable.

Libraries will change over to a new system starting from Wednesday, May 28, when normal service is expected resume, but with improvements in quality for customers and at a lower cost.

Benefits of the new system include an enhanced online catalogue with a user-friendly interface, improved account management, easier access to e-books, e-audiobooks and other digital assets as well as a calendar of events.

The change of supplier, which comes as Pembrokeshire Libraries joins an all-Wales Public Library Service consortium, has been supported with Welsh Government funding.

Currently, there are no plans to close any manned libraries, including the Mobile and Library at Home Service, while the work is being undertaken. Readers will still be able to borrow books, but they must bring their library card with them as staff will not be able to look up any details.

Loan dates will be extended for items due between May 8 and June 14 to June 16 (or the next open day for your local library). There will be no overdue charges during this period, but any existing debt will carry over to the new system.

Two years of loan history will carry over onto the new system. Library users can download their full loan history from the current online catalogue before Wednesday, May 7 via the Library Service webpage, www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/libraries-and-culture

Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services Cllr Rhys Sinnett said: “There will be some disruption to library services as we switch over to the new management system and as our library staff learn new skills, there will also be some disruption to our e-resources, so please bear with us.

“If customers remember to bring their library card to the library, you can still borrow books as normal. From Wednesday, May 28, we’ll start using the new and improved system.”
