Tenby’s Steps2Health walking club has been out and about in Pembroke, Tenby, Begelly and Waterwynch this September.

30 club members travelled to Pembroke on the first Saturday of the month. It was overcast, warm and humid, but stayed dry throughout the walk. Starting from the Commons car park, Kym led the Speedies up Goose’s Lane and on to Holyland Woods. The boardwalk is still closed, but the high level path was muddy but passable. Marlene, Annie and Donna led the Steadies past Barnard’s Tower for a circuit of the lower mill ponds. The Speedies exited the woods and continued on to the millponds, but the Steadies were long gone. Both walks finished in the Main Street and a choice of local cafes for coffee and cake. Everyone enjoyed their trip to Pembroke and the quiet scenic walks it offers.

On Saturday 14, 36 club members gathered at Battery Gardens, Tenby, for beach walks. It was much milder than earlier in the week, with nice sunny intervals. Barbara led the Speedies onto the beach and set off towards Castle Hill at a brisk walk. Chris, backed by Jane and Annie, led the Steadies past the golf club to Black Rock at a more measured pace. By the time they turned onto the South Beach there was no sign of the Speedies, who were on the North Beach by then, heading for First Point. They kept up their good pace all the way to St Teilo’s church hall for a charity coffee morning. After doing their best to eat all the sandwiches and cakes on sale and win all the nice raffle prizes, the walkers made their way home after another great morning out.

On September 21, 33 members gathered behind Kilgetty Community Centre. Kym led the Speedies towards Begelly Arms and onto the path towards Thomas Chapel at her usual brisk speed. The Steadies followed. The old railway track was peaceful and serene. The Steadies turned around first and took the lane that leads to Begelly church. They stopped for a photograph as the Speedies swept past them into the church hall. Some of the ladies from the church kindly put on refreshments for the walkers and the chat was busy as they enjoyed a fine ending to a very social walk.

After a week of wind and showers, the delightful weather on September 28 brought a turnout of 38 walkers, of which 26 joined the Steadies walk. Jane and Brian led the Speedies through the town to the Croft. Chris, Marlene and Annie guided the Steadies along behind the Speedies. The Speedies carried on along the Coast Path to Waterwynch, returning via the Old Tenby Road. The Steadies walked the North Beach to First Point and back, a much easier route with no long hills. Afterwards, most walkers enjoyed coffee at Tenby Fire Station in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, while some visited the harbour in the autumn sunshine.
