Bishop Wyn Evans will be discussing St David’s Cathedral in the 17th century at the next Pembrokeshire Historical Society meeting.
The former Bishop of St Davids has always taken a special interest in the history of the cathedral, both the fabric of the building and its role in the religious life of Wales, and his previous lectures to the society have been very well received.
For his next talk Bishop Wyn will be taking a look at one of the low points in the history of this remarkable building, the 1600s, when the Civil Wars saw roofs stripped of lead so that side chapels fell into ruin – and when there were even plans for St David’s to be abandoned in favour of a new cathedral, perhaps near the Bishops’ Palace in Abergwili, that would be more central for the diocese.
All are welcome to the lecture at the Pembrokeshire Archives in Prendergast, Haverfordwest on Friday, December 6, 2.30pm.
