Kilgetty Community Hall looked very different when WI members met last Tuesday as tables were ready for learning how to make a piece of pottery.
President Anne Pugh opened with birthday wishes of the month for Kath, Nicole and Susan.
Speaker and patient teacher for the evening was talented potter Carole Brinton-Thomas. She has lived in Saundersfoot for over 50 years and started the Saundersfoot pottery.
Carole told the story of clay making in photos and explaining the process of drying, firing in the kiln, painting and decorating and finally glazing the pieces to provide a seal.
Carole had brought various items of pottery including, jugs, vases, ornaments for the house or garden etc. to show how everyone can model and make something from clay. Each member had brought a rolling pin and an old towel and was then given a large piece of clay to produce their own ‘masterpiece’.
Lots of chatter ensued as they spent the next hour engrossed in clay modelling. Every single item was different; it was amazing to see how varied and imaginative the pieces were.
In the formal part of the meeting, Monica, Lyn and Hilary were confirmed as attending the spring council meeting. The learning hub was encouraged and Anne and Lyn explained its use.
Members expressed interest in attending the Rosebowl on April 24. Names were checked for the trip to the Royal Mint on May 15, and for the mystery trip in June, and orders taken for 2025 diaries.
Card making for members’ birthdays will be done at craft group on April 23 at 1.30pm onwards.
The competition was for a quirky piece of pottery, judged by Carole: 1st Lyn Lawson; 2nd Josie Fanus; 3rd Julie McFee. Chris Blundell won the raffle.
Carole collected the pottery items and took them home for firing. Another afternoon or evening is to be arranged for painting and finishing.
Next meeting is May 14 at 7pm, Kilgetty Community Hall.
