As part of the Narberth A Cappella Voice Festival this year, Span Arts has organised a series of engaging and uplifting workshops to be held at Bethesda Chapel, Narberth on March 4.
Morning workshops comprise the following:
Ukrainian Folk with Khrystyna Makar
This masterclass will be conducted by the famous Ukrainian soprano Khrystyna Makar. Her duty is to convey and show the world her rich musical heritage.
During practice, you will get acquainted with several songs of different content and style to understand exactly how to perform a Ukrainian art song.
Soul-based songs to boost your mood with Melissa James
Lift your spirits and find your soulful voice with this empowering singing workshop.Through soul-infused exercises and group performances, you’ll learn to tap into your emotions and express yourself through song.
Roxane Smith Pop-a-pella Workshop
In this workshop Roxane will be teaching acapella pop music Pop-a-pella! This gives you a good idea of just how cheesy the songs and Roxane’s humour are likely to be! The songs vary from the sixties (e.g. Mamas and Papas or Beachboys) all the way through to more current songs.
In the afternoon, there are three further workshops to choose from:
Rachel Uí Fhaoláin
People of all ages and singing abilities are welcomed to this fun and interactive workshop with Rachel. In keeping with the inter-generational aspect of her workshops and the importance of song transmission across the generations Rachel is really looking forward to sharing some traditional songs in both Irish & English from her own repertoire during her time at the Narberth A Capella Voice Festival, while also exploring group singing and harmonising.
Georgian Folk with Stuart Jones
Stuart will be teaching songs from the Republic of Georgia, which has one of the oldest and richest singing traditions in Europe.
Expect scrunchy, vibrant chords and haunting melodies – a singing experience quite unlike any other! Stuart will teach the songs by ear, so no musical knowledge or experience is necessary.
Songs from the Congo with Roxane Smith
‘Songs from the Congo’ is a fantastic workshop that will involved singing the songs of Mahdia Daulne of Zap Mama.
The songs are rhythmic which is mesmerising and meditative but also have harmonies that are beautiful and juicy. Bring comfy shoes; stepping is obviously not compulsory, but is traditional and can help with the rhythm.
Finally, on Sunday, March 5, Latin American Grooves and Choir Vocal Loops with Camilo Menjura accommodates singers of all levels.
