West Country music legends ‘The Wurzels’ will be headlining Pembroke Castle’s first ever ‘Cider & Sausage Festival’ on the evening of Saturday, July 1.
The castle team has announced that the 900 year old iconic landmark will stage its first live music event since 2019 and it is expected to be a fun filled night of musical entertainment along with some quality food and beverages.
Headliners ‘The Wurzels’ will be supported by local bands ‘Preseli Pete & The Bluestone Boys’ and ‘Daisy B & The Daisychain’. A variety of delicious craft ciders, including Pembroke’s very own ‘Pembrokeshire Cider’ alongside an array of other beverages will be served by Absolute Event Bars. The Castle Kitchen Team will be offering concertgoers the opportunity to indulge in some mouth-watering local sausages.
The Wurzels, best known for their Hits of the 70’s, Combine Harvester, I am a Cider Drinker, The Blackbird Song, Morning Glory, Drink Up thy Zider, etc. now have a huge cult following throughout the U.K.
In 1976 The Wurzels hit the jackpot with their smash hit ‘Combine, it made No 1 and sold over 500,000 copies in the U.K. alone. The B-side ‘Blackbird’ was No 1 in Canada. This was followed up by ‘Cider Drinker’, which rocketed up the charts, giving the group a No 3 hit and their second silver disc.
Twenty-five years after ‘Combine Harvester’, The Wurzels were back in the Top 40 Hit Parade with a Remix. They followed this in the summer of 2003 with their OO-AR-SIS parody of the Oasis hit ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger; taken from their album ‘NEVER MIND THE BULLOCKS’.
The Wurzels continue to play over 100 sell-out shows throughout the UK, every year and often feature at Glastonbury Festival. However, this is their first visit to Pembroke and Pembroke Castle. Featuring original band members.
The band, started by Adge Cutler in the 1960s, will feature legendary members Pete Budd (lead vocals), Tommy Banner (vocals and accordion), Lee Delamere (drums), Sedge Moore (bass guitar) and Louie Gribble (keyboards), to create that unmistakable mix of upbeat tunes and humour that has endeared them to millions of fans over the years.
Castle Manager, Jon Williams commented:
“It feels like a long while since we hosted a live music event and its exciting to be putting together an event that should get everybody dancing, singing along and enjoying, what should be, a brilliant local occasion for Pembrokeshire.
“I first met The Wurzels in Bath nearly 20 years ago and couldn’t believe how much of a reaction they had from their audience. So, to bring them to Pembroke Castle and introduce them to our amazing audience will be special.“
