As Cadw celebrates its 40th anniversary, it has announced the return of Open Doors – an annual festival that gives everyone access to Wales’ most extraordinary and treasured historical locations.

Throughout September, over 200 historic landmarks across Wales will host a range of free events, guided tours, and immersive experiences, and 22 iconic Cadw monuments will welcome visitors free of charge.

It’s a unique opportunity for people of all ages to connect with history and experience Wales' vibrant heritage.

At Manorbier Castle on September 14 and 15, 10am-5pm, discover the story of Gerald of Wales. Visitors can immerse themselves in the castle and its surroundings – including its serene chapel and meticulously landscaped gardens.

Tickets will be free but booking is required to visit Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse, Laugharne on September 21 and 22, 10am-5pm. Visitors can tour the renowned Welsh poet’s Writing Shed while looking over the beautiful views of three estuaries.

An Open Doors event at Pembroke Dock on September 7, 11am-3pm covers not only the Heritage Centre but also Paterchurch – a medieval fortified tower - and the town’s Ginkgo Tree which was planted there in the 19th century as a gift from a representative of the Japanese Naval fleet. Booking is required.

The 19th century chapel at Laugharne will open its doors to visitors looking to explore the details between its sacred walls on Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22 . An exhibition of local artefacts, photographs, and stories relating to Laugharne’s history, and its inhabitants will be on display.
