The classic folk song ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ has been treated to a fresh, live sound by local band The Meadows.
Earlier this month, the Carmarthenshire all-sibling band published a video of their first ever performance of the song originally penned by Sandy Denny on their YouTube channel.
Featuring Titania on lead vocals, Fantasia on piano and Melody on flute, the Meadows filmed their unique cover version live at Ty Horeb, a picturesque converted 18th century Wesleyan chapel in Llandeilo.
“We had a lovely time at Ty Horeb,” said Fantasia. “It’s a gorgeous venue, and was decorated beautifully by friends and family specially for the concert. The atmosphere with the candles and greenery collected from around the local woods made it feel really fairytale.
“It was our very first live performance of the song and has been on our list of works to cover as it’s so beautifully written.”
The Meadows were playing to an audience of old and new friends as they introduced their new arrangement into the setlist.
It was Judy Collins’ version of ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ that first reached a public audience, before Sandy Denny made the song her own once more with a similar low-key folk-rock treatment on Fairport Convention’s Unhalfbricking (1969). Since then, plenty of other artists have covered the track, but nothing sounds the same as The Meadows’ new arrangement, which adds a flute part and gives the song a new lease of life in the shape of a different groove.
“Whenever we are jamming new music, it’s interesting to see where a song will take you,” said Fantasia. “We were jamming together and Melody wove the flute around the piano until the solo emerged.
“It does feel quite different from the original, especially with the choice of instruments changing the pace slightly and with Melody’s flute solo and Titania’s interpretation of the lyric.”
As they’re hoping to focus on some recording over the winter, we’ll have to wait until after the new year to experience The Meadows live.
