This month has seen the return of Tenby Jazz Lunches after an absence of 16 months at a new venue: The Clarence House Hotel on Tenby’s Esplanade.

On Sunday, April 11, a sold-out audience joyously lapped up the Dave Cottle / Gary Phillips Trio’s performance and enjoyed a much appreciated three course Sunday lunch.

The well-known Swansea performers cast their net wide, playing numbers from the Hollywood musicals by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Marilyn Monro and others; Bebop, Latin and Dixieland songs appeared; swing numbers by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole had their turn.

Swansea Jazz Club’s Dave Cottle magically combined his keyboard, trumpet and vocals; Gary Phillips, guitar genius behind West Wales gypsy jazz champions The Amigos, added his unique take on blues and funk, from Muddy Waters to George Benson.

Meanwhile, Paul Smith provided the drumbeats to keep everyone up to the rhythm, which all added up to a truly classy concert.

The next jazz lunch is on May 11 at The Clarence. The concert will feature another West Wales favourite, Afternoon in Paris, with their pancontinental musical delicacies. This band of highly skilled, professional musicians offers accessible music grounded in the gypsy swing jazz tradition, combining Latin rhythms, cheeky quotes and vocals in several languages, including Welsh.

Future acts include The New Orleans Hot Potatoes (June 22) and the Dave Jones Quartet (July 20).

Tenby Jazz Lunches offer a chance to enjoy some jazz and food at the Clarence, between midday and 3pm. It’s a chilled experience of jazz complemented by a delightful lunch, all designed to put you in a state of mellow, ready to take on the next week’s challenges. Tickets (£30) include a two-course lunch - advance booking only. Call 01834 844371 or visit www.TenbyJazz.co.uk .
