The New Year 2025 looks set to be coming in with a roar as strong winds on Wednesday are likely to cause disruption.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning for Wind tomorrow (January 1, 2025). The warning lasts from 7am until the end of the day (11.59pm). At the time of writing, it has not been carried through into January 2.
An area of low pressure is expected to track across England and Wales, with strong southwesterly winds on its southern flank. The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75 mph are possible.
Two local New Year Swims have been cancelled (at Angle and St Davids), although the Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim is still going ahead.
Currently, the forecast for Saundersfoot is for rain to fall in the morning, with partial sun from 11am and throughout the afternoon. After a mild night, temperatures will drop to around 6ºC but it will feel more like 2 or 3 degrees.
As a result of the strong winds, there is a small chance of the following disruptions:
• longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
• damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
• power cuts, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
• injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
• injuries and danger to life from flying debris
• some roads and bridges could close.
For coastal areas, the Met Office advises checking the forecasts and tides in your local area.
Beware of large waves, even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.
Take care if walking near cliffs – know your route and keep dogs on a lead.
In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
