Jumping Beans Day Nursery in Pembroke Dock is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, February 2016.

The nursery, which is located in Hawkstone Road, was originally opened in 1996 in Victoria Road, Pembroke Dock, when Maureen Roberston and her two daughters, Jane Taylor and Pamela Evans, relocated from Scotland and spotted a gap in the market for childcare.

Together they took the bold step of setting up a day nursery and chose to name it Jumping Beans - a name that is as popular today as it was 20 years ago.

Jane has since returned to Scotland and Maureen and Pam continue to run the successful business.

The nursery relocated to Hawkstone Road in February 2010 as the owners recognised that the children would benefit from a more creative and more resourceful play area. They realised this would offer greater learning experiences for the children they care for.

The children now have access to a woodland area, painting areas, sand pit, a mud kitchen, a wooden play house, a gardening area, plus bikes, climbing frames and many other outdoor toys and activities.

“It is great to have an outside area that is as good as the inside, offering fun and stimulating opportunities for the children; it was definitely the right decision to move premises,” commented Maureen.

The nursery cares for children from six weeks to 10 years of age and is open from 7.30 am to 6 pm, from Monday to Friday.

They offer - school runs, after school clubs, holiday clubs, Flying Start and flexible hours to suit each family’s individual needs.

Healthy and delicious meals are cooked daily on the premises by Pam.

Inside is inviting and resourceful, with areas set out to create learning opportunities for the children. These include a home corner, craft area, small world, a book corner, maths area, construction and many more. The children have opportunities to have free play and adult led play throughout the day. There is also a wonderfully resourced baby/toddler area.

Activities are planned and evaulated and learning opportunities are carried out through the medium of play.

The children are respected as individuals with differing needs and requirements and every child is able to play and learn according to their own personal development.

Children are encouraged to be independent, learn self-control and self-confidence through a loving, caring environment which helps lay the foundation for their future development.

“We have cared for so many children over the years and many return to visit us and let us know how they are getting along; this is the best accolade we could ask for,” said Maureen.

“We are also seeing the next generation of children arriving, which is thrilling to see,” she continued.

Over the years, the nursery has won several awards leading other nurseries to achieve high standards. The nursery is CSSIW inspected and Quality assured.

Jumping Beans has been chosen to pilot many schemes over the years and is the first nursery in Wales to have achieved the national award accredited by the Welsh Government for the Health and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme.

They are currently the pilot setting working with Stop it Now and the Lucy Faithful Foundation working with staff, children and parents and outside agencies in order to learn how to keep safe, and are looking forward to the launch of this project this year.

The nursery is well respected by many outside agencies and manager Shirley Marshall says she considers herself very fortunate to lead such an exceptional team.

The Jumping Beans team have been together for several years and the setting is well-known for its high standards and professionalism.

“Parents and families have always been supportive and appreciative of our roles and the quality of care provided, we are grateful for their ongoing support,” explained Shirley.

Owners Maureen and Pam said they couldn’t be more proud of their team’s achievements over the years.

The nursery held its own celebrations with the children last week to mark it’s 20th anniversary, with face painting, balloon modelling, dancing and lots of fun and games throughout the day. They also released balloons with the children.

Thanks also go to Asda and Tesco for their very kind donations for the children’s party.
