A new memorial plaque in tribute to four construction workers who died as a result of a collapse of a section of the Cleddau Bridge back in the 70s has been unveiled by Pembroke Dock Town Council.
The replacement plaque which has been commissioned by the town council, is in memory of William Baxendale, George Hamilton, Evan Phillips and James Thompson, who lost their lives during a partial collapse whilst work was taking place to erect the bridge on June 6, 1970.
The disaster, which would change bridge building forever, saw a 150-tonne section of the part-built bridge crash onto the village below.
A memorial plaque was unveiled on the 25th anniversary of the disaster, however it was reported stolen in 2017 and was never recovered.
The clerk to Pembroke Dock Town Council, Sarah Scourfield stated that it had been hoped that the plaque would have been in place for the 50th anniversary of the tragedy back in June, but due to the Covid-19 crisis, it was delayed.
