On Monday, October 23, the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot hosted a special speaker at their regular Monday evening meeting. Fifteen-year-old Lowri Cross came to relate her experiences at the Girl Guides International Jamboree held in Sønderborg, Jutland, Denmark, at the end of July.
Lowri began by thanking the Rotary members for their generous contribution to her fundraising efforts. In all, she raised over £1,000 to cover her expenses with the surplus going to the Guides. Lowri described the selection process and how she was the sole representative from Pembrokeshire and one of only ten from Wales.
She had prepared a Powerpoint presentation with pictures of the event and spoke with clarity and confidence for one of such a young age. She surprised everyone when she told them there were 40,000 young people at the temporary camp, almost a temporary city! Despite it raining constantly, the days were filled with activities, but of course the highlight was the opportunity to meet other young people from all over the world and she reeled off a list from the USA to Zimbabwe and Australia.
Rotarian Peter Williams thanked Lowri for taking the time to give the talk and praised the Guides movement for bringing so many young people together when there is currently so much division in the world. He said that the Rotarians were delighted to be able to help a youngster from the local community. Lowri is currently volunteering to help with the Brownies as part of her Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.
