Speaker at the April meeting of Saundersfoot WI was Sandra Davey from the Paul Sartori Hospice at Home charity.
President Gwen welcomed everyone to the meeting. Gwen was thanked for the table flowers and the birthday bouquet for Pat. Minutes of the last meeting were signed; the newsletter was read and dates noted. Everybody said they enjoyed the lunch in March. Gwen asked for suggestions for the July outing.
Illustrating her talk with slides which introduced various members of the team, Sandra Davey explained that the Paul Sartori charity was founded in memory of Fr Paul Sartori, a much-loved Haverfordwest-based priest who saw the urgent need for hospice care in Pembrokeshire. He died from cancer at the young age of 39 in 1980. He was himself unable to see his ideas brought to fruition but a small group of his local parishioners were inspired to set up a charity in his name.
That small home service team of six carers set up in May 1981 has now grown to a passionate and dedicated team of highly qualified medical professionals together with volunteers and support staff. They also have ten charity shops in the county. The charity provides free, supportive care and advice for those in the later stages of life-limiting illness in the comfort of their own home. It was an inspiring and informative talk about a charity that provides a vital local service. Gwen gave the vote of thanks.
Sue won the raffle prize and the meeting ended with a ‘ship’ quiz provided by Jean, over tea and biscuits.
Saundersfoot is a small, informal and friendly group, and always welcomes new members.
