There was double delight for talented local bowler Ysie White at the Atlantic Rim Championships hosted by Wales last month.
But, belying her tender years, Ysie took it all in her stride as she and her team-mates bowled superbly throughout the tournament to strike gold for Wales in the women’s fours.
The rink, which also featured Anwen Butten, Melanie Thomas and Bethan Russ, won all but one of their round robin section games, losing only to Zimbabwe.
But revenge is sweet, as they say, and so it was as they again met in the semi-finals, with this time the Welsh four coming out on top 14-10, before going on to defeat South Africa 15-9 in the final.
As if that was not enough for Ysie to celebrate, she was also selected for the pairs discipline where she and her partner, Sara Nicholls, of Llandeilo, again impressed as they reached the semi-finals.
On this occasion, though, she had to be content with a bronze medal as this time it was their South African opponents who held sway before going on to win the final against Guernsey.
Afterwards, Ysie paid tribute to the Wales team management for their support and encouragement, with a “massive thank you” going to Hazel Wilson, Anita Williams and Wendy Price.... as well as to Alis Butten for her outstanding photography!
The championships may now only be a memory, but Ysie, who works for Whitland Engineering, still has plenty to look forward to.
Next weekend she will be skipping a rink for Wales in the senior home internationals in Jersey, while in July she will be travelling to Ayr in Scotland with the Welsh Under 25s team - her last year with the juniors.
But even that might be surpassed next year, as it is understood that, following their medal-winning exploits at the Atlantic Rim Games, the successful Welsh players may have qualified for the 2020 World Championships in Australia - watch this space!
