I am convinced that the thousands of readers who follow the adventures of the Tenby Seniors on this page will recall the article in the Observer of Friday, June 24, concerning the fortunes of the Seniors at the Trefloyne course on Thursday, June 16. Just to refresh your memory, Tenby managed to snatch defeat from the clenched jaws of victory by the tiniest of margins and the team vowed to exact revenge on the Penally ‘Flying Tree’ - remember? - Club when they visited The Burrows for the return match.

And so on Tuesday 18 mature golfers from Trefloyne descended on the Tenby links, old friendships were renewed, past opponents were remembered and from 10:45 onwards, nine fourballs took to the course to decide if the outcome of the 2016 confrontation would be a draw or a whitewash.

First, a little background. This tournament is the last of the Summer season for Trefloyne and the penultimate for Tenby, and in addition, both captains; Peter Williams from Tenby and Mike Allen from Trefloyne, are winding down as the Seniors’ annual general meetings approach. Both teams’ current vice-captains will be taking over after the AGMs - and it was interesting to see that they played against each other in the same match today - you will discover their names, dear reader, at a later date.

Back to the match, where the weather was dull and cloudy, but at the same time hot and humid, the wind was just strong enough to have an effect, and the rough was punitive should a stray shot leave the cut and prepared.

Starting at 10:45, the nine games could soon be seen spread out around the links, and the last fourball were quite late finishing - in fact, a couple of the first games out had finished their match meal before the tail-enders had finished changing - gannets! There was still enough to go around, and Lee’s cheffing coupled with Emma’s serving was extremely well received by both teams.

The charity raffle was a slight disappointment to the home team, since the Trefloyne lads scooped two bottles of wine and one golf ball, while Tenby punters had to be content with just two golf balls. However, this mild disappointment soon turned to delight as the result of the match was declared - Tenby 7, Trefloyne 2 - Huzzah! You will not be surprised by captain Peter’s ill-concealed pleasant suprise (right) and captain Mike’s tolerant smile in the photograph. A very pleasing result since Trefloyne trounced the Tenby team at Trefloyne 6.5 to 2.5 recently - so it’s honours roughly even between the two long-time rivals.

By the time you read this little offering, the Seniors will have enjoyed an Away Day at Derllys Court yesterday (Thursday) - then later we have the last match of the season away at Fairwood Park on Wednesday, September 23. I have saved the best until last - Friday, September 16, is the day that we compete for the Tommy Hutton Bowl, and the delightful Marion Hutton awards the winning team with the trophy that she presented in memory of her husband - don’t miss it!
