The monastic island of Caldey will remain closed to visitors this year in light of the pandemic.

Normally the monks and islanders would welcome thousands of day-visitors to share the delights of their island home throughout the summer season, but the decision was made on Friday to keep Caldey closed for 2020, with a statement explaining: “We regret to announce that due to the many aspects involved in getting people across to the island from Tenby via the ramp, the boats and the amphibious vehicle, and the difficulty in implementing strict safety measures on the island, the Abbey has decided that the safety of both islanders and visitors would be compromised if boats were to resume.

“Therefore, the island will remain closed for the whole of the 2020 season. We understand and respect this decision, whilst acknowledging how disappointing it is for so many people.

“We hope to welcome you all back in 2021. Thank you for your many messages and enquiries, and your good wishes for the island and community.”

It’s not all bad news however, as the iconic Caldey Boats will still be offering a variety of trips around the island from mid-July, leaving from Tenby’s harbour area and Castle Beach.

There will be more information provided from the ticket office based in Castle Square where customers will be able to choose the trip that is right for them and their family, with everyone welcome, including dogs.
