Members of Lower Landsker Trefoil Guild have enjoyed a busy spring, making the most of the beautiful weather on the weekly Wednesday walks. Having tried out most of Tenby’s coffee shops throughout the winter, they now look forward to sitting with their coffee on the Harbour in the sunshine.
At the March meeting members enjoyed a Welsh morning to celebrate St David. Margaret and Barbara M made delicious leek and pPotato soup and Betty brought her famous Welsh cakes for dessert. Nicole taxed members’ brains with a Welsh quiz and other members read poems of Welsh life. All agreed that it had been a most enjoyable, informative morning.
Later in the month four members travelled to Bridgend for the Trefoil Cymru Annual Meeting hosted by Central Glamorgan trefoil Guild. Many Trefoil members have been Guide leaders in the past and it was good to meet up with old friends from past camps and events. The morning began with a welcome to the county followed by a very entertaining ukulele group called Ukelania who played songs from every era and soon had everyone singing, bringing back happy memories of good times past. The laughter continued with a cut throat game of musical bingo proving just how competitive Guide Leaders can be!
After a delicious lunch, the main speaker of the day was introduced. She was Grace Lewis, Lead Engineer at Aston Martin. This young lady was such an inspiring speaker, whose rule for life is ‘If anyone tells you that you can’t do something, do it twice!’
Grace had always been interested in taking things apart and putting them back together from childhood but had had to overcome many obstacles to reach her goal, having also worked for McLaren before being headhunted by Aston Martin. She is also involved as a mental health and inclusion volunteer and an ambassador for schools in Wales.
Grace proves the point that you can still be feminine and work in science and technology and one of her proudest possessions was Spacewoman Barbie! She had obviously met with misogyny in her career but she left everyone with the impression that it would not defeat her.
The afternoon ended with tea and chat, and it was particularly good for one of our members, Jenny Vince who had done her Guiding in the Bridgend area and was able to renew her acquaintance with Gill Clay, grand-daughter of Lord and Lady Baden Powell, founders of the Guide and Scout movements. Gill has recently been honoured by Great Western Railways who have named a train after her.
The whole event embodied the central aims of Trefoil Guild, to provide Fun, Friendship and Support.
