THE first Saturday of October was a glorious morning for a Steps2Health walk. The only problem was that the minibus to Freshwater East could not be located.

After some scrabbling around, lifts were organised for half the passengers and 33 people made it to the South Pembrokeshire seaside destination. The club offers sincere apologies to those who were left behind.

The rest of the morning went rather better. Kym and Jane led the Speedies through the dunes, then up the hill to enjoy the views. Chris, backed by Annie and Donna, led the larger Steadies group across the beach for a very enjoyable, but much less energetic walk. At the end the walkers piled into Jack’s for refreshments.

On Saturday, October 12, there were 37 walkers for a town walk on a very pleasant autumn day. Brian, backed by Jane, led the Speedies to the Nabbs for an atmospheric walk along the ancient causeway through the marshes, before returning to town. Kym, supported by Annie and Chris, led the Steadies on a shorter route to Black Rock, Kiln Park and back to town via St John Hill and Merlin’s Gardens. Most of the walkers went to the Old Chapel afterwards for refreshments.

Saturday 19 brought a fabulous autumn morning as 42 members gathered in Kilgetty for a favourite walk. Kym, supported by Jane, led the Speedies via Ivy Chimney Lane to the top of the Dramway in Stepaside. By the time they made their way down the multi-user path to Wiseman’s bridge and on to Coppet Hall, the Steadies were long gone. The Steadies led by Marlene and backed by Donna, had taken the shorter and easier route via Errox Hill and St Issell’s church to Coppet Hall. The Speedies finally caught up with the Steadies in the village, where they were enjoying refreshments in the local cafes. Amazingly, towards the end of the morning, a totally unexpected short shower sent everyone running for cover.

On the 26th, as 28 walkers gathered at Battery Gardens, the weather was tremendous once again. Barbara, backed by Brian, led the Speedies around the seaward edges of Tenby, the club’s Scenic Route. Kym, supported by Annie, followed behind at the head of the larger Steadies group. When the Speedies arrived at the North Beach zigzag, they continued on to the Heart Attack Steps then across the North Beach to the harbour and Castle Hill. When the Steadies arrived at the same zigzag, they went down on to the North Walk and the easier route to the harbour. Both groups finished at the harbour, where they dispersed in search of refreshments, bringing to an end a very pleasant walking month.
