Steps2Health is an entry-level walking club based in Tenby, welcoming new members.
On St David’s Day, 33 Steps2Health club members assembled in the sunshine at Laugharne. Barbara, backed by Brian, led the Speedies along Dylan’s Birthday walk and up to the top of St John’s Hill. The view from the top was as stupendous as ever, well worth the steep climb. Chris, supported by Annie and Kym, led the large Steadies group past the castle and Brown’s Hotel to St Martin’s churchyard. After a brief pause at Dylan Thomas’ immaculately tended grave, they left via the top exit into Longlanes. The lane was slightly muddy in places. Upon arrival at the Owl and Pussycat café, everyone was ready for refreshments. When the Speedies arrived, there were no seats left inside, but people were very happy to sit out in the now warm spring sunshine - a great start to the new month.
Saturday, March 8, 37 walkers gathered at Tenby’s Battery Gardens. Kym, backed by Barbara, led the Speedies through the town and up to the top of the new graveyard where they admired the view over the town in the mild, hazy sunlight. The wild flowers in the old graveyard were as riot of colour and a delight to see. Annie, supported by Chris and Pat, led the large Steadies group via The Green and Butts Field onto the Croft. The beach was surprisingly busy as they continued via the North Walk and harbour. After once around Castle Hill they headed for St Johns and the busy coffee morning, soon to be joined by the Speedies.
March 15 was a glorious morning for walking, with a clear blue sky and sunshine, even if the temperature was cool. Despite road resurfacing works making the access difficult, 43 walkers gathered in Saundersfoot for a choice of walks on Glen Beach - the best turnout so far this year. Jane, backed by Kym, led the Speedies around the harbour and onto the beach. Donna, with support from Marlene, led the Steadies the same way. The tide was higher than anticipated, foiling the Speedies’ ambition to get to Monkstone Point. Back at the harbour, both groups split up as people headed to their favourite cafe for refreshments.
The following Saturday was dry, sunny and warm. More people carried their winter waterproofs than wearing them. A fair number of club members had gone on the bus trip to Cardiff, reducing the turnout, but 29 walkers gathered for a Tenby town walk. Brian, backed by Barbara, led the Speedies towards Black Rock and on to Crossing Cottage. Marlene, with Annie in support, followed the Speedies to Black Rock. The Steadies turned right through Kiln Park to return to town, while the Speedies turned around at the edge of Penally and returned on the path across the golf course.
The final bright, chilly walk of March took 39 walkers from Kilgetty to Saundersfoot. Both groups took the same route via Errox Hill to St. Issell’s Church. The Steadies, led by Chris and supported by Marlene, then made their way to Coppet Hall and through the tunnel to Saundersfoot. Meanwhile, Barbara backed by Kym, led the Speedies through the woods to the Ridgeway and down to the village.
Steps2Health walks last up to an hour, every Saturday morning apart from around Christmas. Visit www.steps2health.org.uk for more information and to see the walk programme.
