The means by which the bluestones that form the inner circle of Stonehenge made their way from the Preseli Mountains to Salisbury Plain has long been a matter of conjecture – and also contention.

Were they transported by glacial activity during the Ice Age, or were they hauled overland, perhaps to Milford Haven, and then taken up the Bristol Channel on wooden rafts, as tradition has it? Or is there another answer?

For its next meeting, the Pembrokeshire Historical Society will welcome back as its guest speaker Dr Brian John whose talk is titled ‘The Battle of the Bluestones – Mythology versus Science’.

Dr John, who has made a lifetime study of the subject, will be weighing up the evidence in the light of the recent discovery that the six-tonne Altar Stone at the heart of Stonehenge came from the far north of Scotland rather than Pembrokeshire as previously thought.

All are welcome to the lecture which will be on Friday, January 3, at the Pembrokeshire Archives in Prendergast, Haverfordwest, 2.30pm.
