Golden Manor Nursery, Pembroke, recently celebrated their first International Eco Schools Green Flag Award.

Deputy nursery manager Amanda James stated: “We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award; it is a testament to our staff, pupils and parents who have all been involved in working towards this environmental award. We pride ourselves on creating an active and nurturing environment for the children and this award represents our ethos as a forward thinking child care facility.”

Eco-Schools is run in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy. It is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world. Eco-Schools is owned by the Foundation of Environmental Education (FEE) and supported in Wales by the Welsh Government.

Pembrokeshire’s Eco School Officer Kiri Howell explained: “With over 90 per cent of schools in Wales registered as an Eco-School, the programme inspires and empowers pupils to be leaders of change in their communities and widens learning beyond the classroom to develop responsible attitudes and commitment toward sustainable development. Children are never too young to start caring for their environment and Golden Manor Nursery’s success proves this.”

To celebrate the fantastic achievement children dressed in outfits created from recycled materials and performed their very own eco song, before leading a guided tour of the grounds for the Mayor of Pembroke and Mayor of Pembroke Dock.

Mayor of Pembroke, Clr. Mrs. Pauline Waters commented: “The eco song was fantastic to hear and I was impressed that children as young as three remind nursery staff to switch off lights when leaving the room.”

Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Clr. Peter Kraus, stated: “It is an honour to be here. I am overwhelmed by the active involvement and understanding of such young children in matters regarding global sustainability. These really are children of the future.”

This success is yet another great achievement for this award-winning nursery.
