Married this summer, Tammie and Simon Mayhew had an unusual start to their relationship they met at Pembroke Dock railway station on a blind date.
That was ten over years ago - they met on August 10, 2014.
“There was no proposal,” said Tammie. “Simon just took me to the jewellers and we chose a ring!”
Simon (55) and Tammie (50) got married at St John’s Church in Pembroke Dock on July 27, 2024. We asked the couple about their wedding:
Q: What wedding music and hymns did you have?
A: Our hymns were ‘Give me love in my heart’ and ‘Love divine’ we also had Ellie Goulding’s’ How long will I love you’ while we signed the register.
Q: Did you write your own vows?
A: We didn’t write our own vows.
Q: Can you tell us about your rings?
A: We both have Clogau (Welsh gold) rings. Tammie’s is white gold and Simon’s is yellow gold with ‘cariad’ inscribed inside.
Q: Who was in the Wedding Party?
A: Our wedding party was three beautiful bridesmaids: Tammie’s daughter Michelle, Tammie’s daughter-in-law Cerys and Tammie’s great niece Willow; two gorgeous flower girls our granddaughters Lowri & Mila. Simon’s best men were our very handsome grandsons Carson and Kyro; we had Tammie’s son in law as an usher and Tammie’s son Jamie gave her away!
Our friends Sharon Pitman and Neil Hill were our witnesses. Neil has been friends with Simon for over 40 years and he had travelled from Las Vegas to be with us on our special day.
Q: How long before the big day did you start planning it?
A: We started planning a year before the wedding.
Q: Did you go to a Wedding Fair for ideas?
A: We didn’t go to a wedding fair.
Q: What was your gown like?
A: Tammie’s beautiful dress came from Celebrations in Milford Haven; it was an ivory long gown with lace detail at the top with a lacy scoop back, with buttons down the back and a sparkly belt detail!
Q: Who did your hair and make-up?
A: Our hair was done by our own talented hairdresser Sarah Hunt and our make-up was done by another talented lady, Chey Butler, who stepped in last minute.
Q: Did you have a bouquet?
A: All our flowers were done by Rachel’s florist in Pennar: my bouquet, the three bridesmaids posies, all our centrepieces and the men’s buttonholes.
Q: Did you have any favours?
A: Our favours were heart shaped Welsh cakes made by the Yellow Honesty Shop in Whitland.
Q: What did the bridesmaids wear? And what about the Groom and Groomsmen?
A: The bridesmaids wore sage halter neck dresses. The groom and best men, ushers and Tammie’s son all wore the same suits which were hired from Dyfed Menswear in Cross Hands.
Q: Where was the Reception?
A: The reception was at Slebech Park in Haverfordwest. We had 100 guests in the day for an outstanding three-course sit-down meal, then an extra 30 were invited at night and had a finger buffet. We had Chris Lee as DJ; we hired a photo booth from Events Booth, we also hired a sweet cart and post box from Smiles Entertainment and a stunning table plan from Luxe & Blossom.
Q: What was your first dance?
A: Our first dance was Westlife’s ’Flying without wings’.
Q: Did you have a photographer and videographer?
A: Our very talented photographer Beverley Thomas was assisted by her lovely sister Gill.
Q: Did you have a cake?
A: The Yellow Honesty Shop in Whitland also made our cake it was three-tiered with butter icing. The bottom layer was Victoria sandwich, the next tier was chocolate and the top tier was salted caramel. It was decorated with artificial flowers and had a cake topper with Mr & Mrs Mayhew and the date.
Q: What mode of transport did you have on the big day?
A: We had a stunning vintage car which was hired and driven by Tammie’s brother-in-law Gary and sister Donna.
Q: Where were your Hen and Stag nights?
A: Tammie had a Hen in Bristol and Tenby
Simon went carting and out for a few drinks with the boys.
Q: Did you go away on honeymoon?
A: We haven’t had a honeymoon.
Q: What was your favourite moment of the big day?
A: Best moment was walking back out of church and seeing everyone so happy.
Q: What would be your top tips for a bride-to-be?
A: Don’t get too stressed, and enjoy every moment because the day goes so fast.
