SECRETARY Lindsay Oeppen was delighted to welcome Rotary’s Mary Adams as the guest speaker at the October meeting of Narberth Ladies Probus Club.
Mary Adams was the immediate past District Governor for Rotary International. She now has a new role as Rotary Direct membership Coordinator for South Wales.
Amongst many other projects during her time as President of Narberth and Whitland Rotary, Mary helped to establish the Living Memory Club, offering the opportunity for people who are lonely or have health issues and would like to start socialising again.
The Living Memory Club meets twice a month at Narberth Rugby Club and members participate in a wide variety of activities. However, the highlight is on the first Thursday when there is a singing group, affectionately known as the Elderly Brothers, with members of Whitland Male Voice Choir providing the music with their guitars.
As District Governor, Mary was able to be involved in Rotary projects across South Wales, including the Festival of Youth in Cardiff and presenting awards at the Welsh Disabled Sports Championship, when the Tenderfoot Team from Saundersfoot were overall winners.
In her new role, Mary is helping to recruit volunteers who want to be involved with Rotary projects but cannot attend regular meetings. With direct membership, they can choose a project that suits them, from one of the 55 clubs in South Wales. The scheme appeals to a much younger demographic.
Mary’s talk highlighted the real aims of Rotary: to help create a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in their communities, and in themselves.
Pam Morgan thanked Mary for her inspirational talk. The club next meets on Friday, November 8 at the Plas. New members are always welcome.
