Narberth Jazz was very fortunate to host the prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist Alan Barnes at a performance in the Plas Hotel Narberth last week, October 17.
He was accompanied by one of the club’s regular favourites John Gibbon (drums) with Olly Blanchflower (Bass) and Ross Hicks (piano)
Alan Barnes is best known for his work on clarinet and alto saxophone. With which he plays music that was radical 50 years ago but now he infuses it with so much passion and energy you could believe it was minted on the spot.
Many of the tunes were familiar to the audience and included ‘Suddenly its spring’, ‘No More crying’, ‘I want to be happy’, ‘Prelude to a kiss’, ‘London by Night’, ‘Tis Autumn’, ‘The lamp is lower’, ‘Happiness’, ‘You would be so nice to come home to’. To name but a few.
His presentation that evening, together with the superb backing and support from the John Gibbon Trio, resulted in a relaxed and mutually sympathetic musical performances by the entire ensemble.
The capacity audience were captivated by his beautiful interpretations and would not let him leave the stage until he played an encore. Alan’s humour and superb musicianship will long be remembered by the audience lucky enough to be there in Narberth.
Narberth Jazz is a voluntary group registered with the Charity Commission. The club was formed to continue the work of SPAN Jazz in bringing the best possible live music from the very broad realm of Jazz.
